The city of Chicago

Finally, 1 week after my arrival I can feel that I am all settled in. The temperature right now is -6 celsius. A couple of days ago it was down to -22 celsius. So how about my big trip? I started off from Malmö at 05 am and went over to Copenhagen at 06 am. But the queue for London was really huge, so be in time if you’re ever going to London and Heathrow airport. I enjoyed myself throughout the trip but my arrival to Heathrow airport was a disaster because you had to run from terminal to another. Actually, you can’t run. You have to take the bus because of the vast distance between the terminals, see below.

On the bus from a terminal to another.

But the security was not as you’ve probably heard on the news. It was standard despite after everything that has happened. So I was on time to my flight to Chicago.

American Airlines 067 to O’hare International airport in Chicago

But now we’re at the interesting part of my entire trip. I had to go through three security checks in USA. I gotta admit that the security in the USA is way better than in Great Britain. But there’s explanations for that too. So the first check was the customs where they thought I “looked” a bit funny and suspicious. So I had to go to another room where they put all the suspicious people to question them. I loved their question. But the police officer was really kind and respectful which is probably a thing you don’t expect them to be. Although their religion, political, etc. questions were pointless, it made me almost miss my flight to La Crosse, Wisconsin.

And of course, I almost forgot. They lost my bag in Chicago. So if you ever plan to have a flight connection, choose another city. But I was impressed that they found my bag and delivered it within 36 hours of my arrival. So I was satisfied in the end. In the end, everything will be alright.

In the end everything will be alright.

After almost 40 minutes of my arrival, I was met by 2 girls from UW-L (University of Wisconsin - La Crosse) who really helped me out the first day/night. The city of La Crosse was really beautiful from the airplane. For more pictures, look for me at Facebook.

This has been one of the best weeks so far. One thing I miss though on campus is local night clubs like in Sweden. But that’s an adjustment I have to make. We went out a couple of days ago to a bar and they either played country or hiphop music. I admired the skills of the deejay where he basically pressed stop and play all the time. I think somewhere along the road he lost the concept of being a deejay which is: TO MIX MUSIC!

Ah, God. I wanted just to go up there and call him names but I was busy with having fun with the bartenders. I asked a bartender to mix me a drink and he looked at me in a weird way and said: You’re not making any sense. This was after I told him that I wanted Bacardi Raz, Vodka, Sprite and a bit of lime. I asked him to just take a small zip of my drink and he was suprised how good it tasted. People don’t know how to drink around here. Oh well, I guess I have to teach them what good music sounds like and how to drink the Swedish way. Elements in the Mix!

The food, my God! Everything taste good around here. I was at an Italian resturant yesterday and it was heaven, I almost cried of how good the food tasted. Also, I got a phone now with an american number. So if you want it; join Facebook.

On Monday the classes will start. I will be taking psychology courses only during this semester which are as follows: Advanced Social Psychology, Theories of Personality, Psychological Testing and Assessment and Advanced Research Methods. I think this combination will be interesting. Alot of things happened during the last week but I will find some time to write about it.

Next week, we’re off to Minneapolis and the biggest mall in USA; The Mall of America. PS. The address to my blog is now: http://www.elements-usa.com

People lie because the truth hurts

Mac OS X 10.5 - Leopard

It’s been a while, not so long since my last post. What should we talk about today? Well, first of all I installed Mac OS X 10.5 - Leopard today and it runs so smoothly. Earlier I had a few problems with Adobe Suite CS3 which included applications such as Dreamweaver, Indesign and Photoshop.

Microsoft Office 2008

I have also installed Microsoft Office 2008 and there are several news in this release, one of my favorites is the citation function which formats a reference list automatically successively while you type in your references in. This function saves you time and lets you focus on the content instead of wasting time on formal issues. Alot more templates and functions which makes life easier are included in this release. It is stable and runs without problems. Upgrade is recommended.

Beside this technical stuff which I know most people love (isn’t that right Karin?) I had my good-bye party yesterday at, yes.. Karin’s place which was pretty nice. Where do we go from here one may wonder? I really don’t know. But one thing is for sure, I never like complicated things. Yes, that is pretty hard to believe when it comes to me because usually I like things to be difficult and complicated in sense it gives one challenge. You learn from challenges.

How about the title? Well, it can be expressed in different ways. People don’t tell the truth because the truth hurts. Kids don’t lie because they are afraid, they lie because they have something to hide. The fear of loss, insecurity, pain are a few reasons that might come at hand why people don’t tell the truth. However, I don’t consider it to be wrong to lie if it’s for a good cause. But if it’s for an immoral cause then one shouldn’t do it. Also, if a person asks for the truth; that person should be prepared to eventually get hurt. When you ask for it, it is on your own risk.

What happens now? Well, usually the truth hurts. When a person gets hurt, then that person will become upset or angry towards the person who told the truth. So, is this the ultimate price one have to pay for being honest? I really wonder sometimes what goes on inside of people’s head. Probably something like this:

you have to tell me the truth, then I can get angry at you for being honest and then I’m going to act like a little baby and not talk to you again because I’m so terribly bad at accepting honest constructive criticism.

There you have it. On Friday the 18 of January I will be presenting a final paper about my teacher practise during autumn 2007. Hopefully it will be an interesting 30 minutes presentation. The best part about this presentation is that I love talking about education with feeling.

Saturday the 19th of January will cover the last education course in my teacher education, which is called the teacher as the leader. This will probably be one of the most interesting courses. Hopefully when I get back from my semester in USA, I will be applying for my teacher degree. Year 2008 will probably be a milestone in my life. At 19 o’clock on Saturday I will be heading towards Malmö to spend the night there in order to take the train over to Kastrup Airport in Copenhagen at 06 o’clock in the morning on Sunday.

More about my trip when it will begin. Hopefully nothing like this (today’s news) will happen when I arrive at Heathrow Airport in London on Sunday.

Finally, a couple of words about me from David Schaffer (only in Swedish).

Bachelor thesis seminar

The days in Sweden are about to end, atleast for now. During the past couple of days I have been sick and meanwhile working on finishing my bachelor thesis. Fortunately, I managed. The bachelor thesis has been sent for the review seminar at Kristianstad University on the 10th of January, 13 - 15 o’clock. Hopefully people, mostly students, comes to learn something instead of being Big Foot with a chainsaw on my bachelor thesis. (Do you see the connection to the picture above?)

During the last days I have been reviewing a thesis regarding differences between people who have experience in voice and facial recognition and people without this experience. Enjoyed every page of it since I like police psychology in general, and this thesis was based on eye witness psychology which has a close connection to police psychology.

11 more days, then I am off to an exciting adventure. My friend from Vaxjo University arrived a couple of days ago to New Orleans, USA. Hopefully I will be able to go for Mardi Gras. But that is at the end of January, beginning in February. Until then I have to finish up with fixing my International Driving License on 14th of January in Halmstad.
